Bookseller's Choice (July) Book Club: Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson

Our Bookseller’s Choice Book Club is a true literary “grab bag” — a charcuterie board of compelling reads selected across genres by our bookselling team. Each month, we gather at the shop to dive into a new selection, sharing perspectives and lively conversation about the book and its themes.

The summer heat has us going a little crazy, so for the month of July, we’re reading Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by the one and only Hunter S. Thompson.

This seminal 1971 "gonzo journalism" novel by Hunter S. Thompson chronicles a drug-fueled, surreal road trip to Las Vegas. The narrative follows protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney, Dr. Gonzo, as they descend into a hallucinogenic, chaotic haze to chase the distorted remnants of the American Dream. Through a series of chaotic encounters, the book serves as a dark, satirical critique of the 1960s counterculture's decline and a critique of American society.
